Hopefully you might find this as useful as it was to me... MSN Messenger for Linux. The installation is simple and the software works very well.

http://amsn.sourceforge.net/

Installation:

Download amsn-0_xx.tar.gz

$ tar -xvzf amsn-0_xx.tar.gz

$ cd msn

$ ./amsn
or
$ wish amsn:D

It's that easy!

With a Debain system you can use

apt-get ccmsn

then when its installed

type from a shell ccmsn

and it fires up fine.

i have also heard of Jabber

is it very stable??

i normally use gaim, but i would like to devote gaim to just ICQ, i normally use gnome messenger for messenger but it isn't very stable, and crashes often...

amsn is very stable and the file transfers work properly as well. it is basically ccmsn on steroids.

I use gaim since I have AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ names.

I use AMSN every day, and it's worked perfectly for me. I also use the official version of AIM.

how do you make autoload when you start X server? I tried a symbolic link of amsn to the /.kde/Autostart directory, but it didn't work.

thanks,

gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net) is probably the best IM client available for linux :-D in GNOME, that is. i don't use KDE but i'm sure they have something equally spiffy, some mention kopete.

Try the 0.60 cvs release of gaim. It's _very_ nice.

Heh, a tip from an ultra n00b:
I enjoy Everybuddy personally; it integrates Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and other types of chat protocols.
It's pretty fun.

Now there's a mouthfull. The answer is: "Through much pain and torment".
What Distribution are you using? If it's Red Hat, get the RPM. That'll be relatively easy. Just take care of the dependencies Kpackage spits out (should you be using KDE). you can get those Libs at rpmfind.net/rpm or whereever the hell that page is. Google for RPM Find

we need to know what kind of package management you have.

respond with your rpm version:
$ rpm --version

failing that if you have gcc:
$ gcc --version

then maybe we can help you from there.

I'm having problems with AMSN right now ... it says that I don't have the wish interpreter ... where can I download it? I've looked up Google and I can't find anything.

wish is a part of the tcl/tk scripting language.

So would I have to install Tcl/tk to get wish?

I use this.

It don't have file transfer but I never use that anyway.

Works fine for me and has never gone wrong.

If you need file transfer use IRC it works better as its peer to peer rather than going through the MS server.

Just my little bit

I'm using centericq cause I had some problems with Gaim, centericq is fine but for console.. it dosn't look good if you're in X :/ so I guess I'm gonna try others.
