Well the first things to check are the physical connections. You should see a green light on the back of your network card, one on the hub port that the network card is plugged into, one on the hub port that the cable modem is plugged into. Maybe one on the cable modem also but I'm not sure how many of them have lights. If it works on another operating system then you obviously don't have to worry about this.

Give us the output of the following commands:
"ifconfig eth0 up"
"ifconfig"
and let us know what the information you're trying to use to setup your internet connection. Although it should be obvious from this info let us know if you're using dhcp or a static ip.

if it says "bash: ifconfig: command not found" that probably means you need to log into root to be able to issue the command, so you can just type "su" which will allow you to temporarily switch over to root in the current terminal.

ok this is what it is telling me.
with the ifconfig eth0 up its just taking me back to the command line.

with the ifconfig this is what its telling me.

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:BA:F3:E3 :D5
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MTU:1500 METRIC:1
RX packets:229 error:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:4 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collision:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:14800 (14.4kb) TX bytes:2360 (2.3kb)
Interrupt:10 Base address:0xd800

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:68 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:68 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:5060 (4.9kb) TX bytes:5060 (4.9kb)

I am using the dhcp. But i have tried both the dhcp and the static so im not sure which to use i know my ISP uses dchp though

The character combination " :D" is the same as the code for the big green smiley guy, he'll show up instead of " :D" unless you check the "disable smilies in this post" box at the lower left-hand corner of the post/reply page.

The subject of getting your network configured has a long history here, so you might want to try the Forum Search (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=search), using keywords like "NIC" "network", and "cable-modem". It will let you view all of the past threads related to the subject, and chances are that you'll find your answer. Also, try the basic suggestions I posted in this thread (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=ed05df9a29dc8bc41baf17c0a0374994&threadid=5637&highlight=ifconfig+alias).
Also, read the Ethernet HOW-TO and Cable-modem HOW-TO at The Linux Documentation Project (http://www.linuxdoc.org).

If you still have problems, repost with the make/model of your NIC, the driver (module) you're trying to use, and the exact steps you've taken so far (along with any accompanying error messages).

actually from what you already said your ethernet driver is fine. now you just need your computer to figure out an ip address.

install dhcp and restart your computer.

:P of course you don't have to restart your computer, but that's the shortest way for me to explain it.

I'm not a Mandrake user myself though I have reviewed some of their online documentation. Looks good to me.

Anyways, have you had a look (or tried) DrakeX? http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/80/en/user.html/draknet.html#MANDRAKE-CONTROL-CENTER
