Ok. its stupid but im a real newbie with LINUX. I have never used it at all and im having trouble jus getting it to install. The problem im having is i guess with the driver disk. I made one using the .IMG file on the cd but im running my harddrives off of the HPT 366 controller on a ABIT BE6II board. What am i doing wrong and how can i get LINUX to begin installing. Try not to get to technical since i dont know anything about this OS. Could someone give a few instructions as to what i need to do for a painless install. I went to the highpoint site and got some drivers that was a gzip format. I uncompressed them to a disk but LINUX didnt see this as a valid driver. Please help me out here because im as dumb as rocks on this on. Thanks.

What distribution of linux are you using? By that I mean, is it Mandrake, RedHat, Debian etc... Tell us what errors, if any, you are getting so more help can be given please.

Thanks.

Im using Redhat 7.0. The problem is that when i try to install it and it asks me what kind of install i want i tell it workstation. It just says error no hardware or something couldnt be detected to install system files to. I think this is because of my IDE controller. Its a seperate UDMA 66 controller along with my other seperate 33 controllers. It doesnt matter what choice i tell it to install i get the same error message. I guess what i need to also know is how to begin the install from with in WINME because i heard it will automatically make a partition for you to create a duel boot. The reason why i say the thing about the controller is because when i run WIN2K i have to press the F6 key to install additional 3rd party drivers for my hightpoint IDE controller for the install to continue or i will get a blue screen. any help would be greatful. Thanks for replying.

did you create a separate partition before running the installation? i got a similar error trying to install on a machine that was running win2k professional on the only partition. i think it's because it was already formatted NTFS and it couldn't recognize the file system. just a thought...

hope it works out for you

No i didnt create a partiton. I was reading the instructions and it said something about making the partitons for you automatically. I think the problem may have something to do with the UDMA 66 controller. It is a seperate controller from the 33 controller. Im running an ABIT BE6II. anyone else out there running the same MOBO. please give me some insite on how to install this OS on the 66 controller. Thank You.

Dude, it's the ATA 66 stuff isn't it?
Before, I had to run Gentus Linux on my same Motherboard. Didn't yours come with that? Well anyhow, go download Mandrake 7.2, it installed on my mobo perfectly! Good luck man.

I had the same problem with RedHat. My Abit BE6-II wouldn't work on UDMA66 channels.

You have two options -
1) switch to UDMA 33 (at least one of your HD's, install it there, download and compile HPT366 drivers and see if it works on UDMA66)
2) Download Linux Mandrake 7.2 (which BTW I think has nicer features for a Linux Newbie like myself) and install it. It has all the drivers you need. I'm running it with win 2K without a problem

I would just like to thank you both Kroke and Andy for your replies. I switch my harddrives to the 33 controller and im gonna try it and see if it works for me. I really didnt want to do that thinking it will slow my performance rate down, but then again some people say it really doesnt show any difference. Thanks again. :D

If I were you I'd still go with Mandrake 7.2, especially if you are new to Linux.

It's a free download if you have fast connection, if not just opick it up with some $10.00 Linux magazine.

Good luck, BTW - I don't see any performace differences on UDM33 vs 66 on Abit BE-6 II.

My main WIN2K drive is running on UDMA33, Linux on UDMA 66. I ran some benchmarks on both for DV RAPTOR (firewire editing card) and they both show the same transfer rates. Go figure.

ok after switching over to the 33 controller the installation is getting further but im running into another problem here. Its asking for me to put in a mount point. What the hell is it asking for. I made a seperate 6gig partition for linux and it tells me its not enough space. probably because im not specifying the mounting point correctly. could someone tell me what im suppose to type in that line. I made the seperate partition from my primary harddrive so my primary harddrive is like hda1.

Hi! I'm running on Redhat 7 too. Why don't u try reading the redhat installation guide at http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-7-Manual/install-guide/

It should get you started.

Hope this helps... ;)
