I have searched for this but I didn't find any posts with this exact problem. I have set up my CD writer as a SCSI device and it suggested to do the same with the second drive if it is present, so my DVD drive is also emulated as a SCSI device. They are /dev/scd0 and /dev/scd1 respectively. I have set up Mplayer to make /dev/scd1 as the DVD device but when I try to play a DVD it says "Could not open DVD device /dev/scd1". How can I make it work? Thanks.

Strangely enough the CD RW drive mounted as SCSI will play CDs just fine, so I don't understand why the DVD drive wouldn't play DVDs.

The CD drive will not only automatically play a CD when one is loaded into it, but I can also play it with XMMS. The DVD drive, while I can mount a non-audio DVD or CD in it, will not load the CD player and will not play CDs in XMMS, because the tracks don't appear in the directory listing, when I choose "Play a file". In other words, the behaviour of the 2 drives is totally different, despite the fact that they are configured and mounted exactly the same way. I can mount non-audio disks in either of them but only the CD drive will actually play VCDs in mplayer or audio CDs in XMMS or the gnome CD player. Before I started using SCSI emulation the DVD drive played DVDs (and probably audio CDs too but I never tried). I don't understand why the two drives do not behave in the same way. Does anyone have any ideas?

Oooops. There was one thing different about the way the 2 drives were configured. My user didn't have read permission on /dev/scd1 but had ownership of /dev/scd0. I'm not sure how that happened, but now that I have fixed the permissions everything works.

We knew if we ignored you long enough you would eventually figure it out. :p
Good job...
