Greets everybody.

I'm no newbie to Linux, but I definitely am a newbie to NICs, and i'm about to have to get one and set it up (about to go to college). Can anybody recommend a nice fast NIC that i can be 100% certain about using in Linux and/or FreeBSD? 'twould be much appreciated.

Linksys NICs use tuliup driver. 3com is supported also but may cost a little more. Just don't get a NIC with "Win" in the name.

Belkin nic (Realtek 8139) Netgear nic (Fa311) most 3com, most intel nics. If you can get your hands on a Netgear nic, I am using it right now with RH8, and it works like a charm. They also offer compatibility with the Linux OS with toll free 24/7 technical support. Lifetime warranty. Go to staples.com and order one. They are like 15 or 20 dollars. Worth every penny.

/me throws out a vote for any one of the Netgear FA311, Realtek 8139, or 3Com 3c905C chipsets.

I'm using them all (in 2 different systems) and they all work wonderfully. The FA311 uses the natsemi module, the Realtek uses the 8139too (or rtl8139 if your kernel is older) module, and the 3Com uses the 3c59x module.

I like the Linksys LNE100TX. It's from their "Network Anywhere" series, and it works great.

I bought one for $20 at WalMart, and it even came with a good, long, piece of CAT5 cable... You could probably find one cheaper online...

Never a problem with 3Com 'vortex' or Intel.

Glad they work for somebody. I have had nothing but trouble with anything from SMC

Maybe it's just my luck

I myself am a firm 3com or Intel fan as far as NICs go. They cost a little more, but they are worth it. I have tried some of the less expensive offshoots out there and not had near the longevity out of them.
