cant write to fat when non root

hey guys, i have this weird problem. i can't seem to write to my fat partitions if im logged in as non-root. ive tried chmod 777 but that doesnt work either. it used to work perfectly. but i compiled my kernel recently and that couldve reset these settings (or may have nothing to do with it). i checked my /etc/fstab and everything looks proper there as well. any ideas?
