The router is LinkSys BEFSR41 with DSL connection and 2 machines called P3-800 and P4_2000. The router is set as a DHCP server. Both machines connect to internet without problem.

However, router assigns IP addresses which differ from those revealed by ifconfig:

P3-800

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:CC:E3:00:EC
inet addr:192.168.1.100 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:10 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:10 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:700 (700.0 b) TX bytes:700 (700.0 b)

P4_2000

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:07:E9:B0:4D:B3
inet addr:192.168.1.101 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:29 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:37 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

TX packets:12 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:924 (924.0 b) TX bytes:924 (924.0 b)

By logging in to router and checking Outgoing log tables, I find that P3-800 has IP address 192.168.1.100 as above, but P4_2000 has IP address 192.168.1.104 and not 192.168.101.

Question1: What is going on with IP addresses?

Question2: How do I access one machine from the other to share files, printers, etc., which at this point I have no idea how to do?

Interrupt:20 Base address:0xa000 I'm not sure about the IP problem, but interrupt 20?! What the devil is up with that? There is no IRQ 20; the highest IRQ is 15.

The IP problem could very well just be an old lease that hasn't expired yet. Do you dual-boot the machine that the router says is .104? If so, then the other OS very likely has a lease taken out on .104 that needs to expire (or be manually released) before the router will tell you the other lease (dumb, I know, but there isn't much you can do about it).

As for IRQ 20, I've seen stuff in Windows take IRQs up to 31, but never in Linux. Hmm, strange. I guess if it works OK... *shrug*

The P4_2000 machine is a recent Dell which came with XP installed. I then put in Mandrake9.0 and dual boot. I will try manually releasing the lease.

In XP the IRQs run from 0 to 23.

So if the IP addresses are straightened out, how do I access one machine from the other?

Samba. You're going to want to make sure you have basic IP connectivity first, but if you have that, then work on Samba.

There's a Help File on Samba in the library here. I'm not sure how good it is; you may want to install and start up SWAT, then surf to http://localhost:901 to do the Samba configuration from there (the help links are generally pretty good).

Both machines are dual boot with W2K and M9.0 on the P3-800 and XP and M9.0 on the P4_2000. At this point I am interested in booting to Mandrake on each machine and accessing one machine from the other. Is Samba also required in this case?

My impression was that Samba is needed only if one machine is running windows.

In that case, Samba would work, but you could also use NFS, if you wanted. There are probably HOWTO's on that at TLDP (www.tldp.org).

In setting up Samba I was able to access the P4-2000 machine from the P3-800 and to mount and view some of the various partitions on that machine. Then in executing mount -a there appeared an error message "ERROR: Unable to open the credentials file". And in Mandrake Control Center under Samba Mount Points an attempted mount resulted in error "mounting partition //p4-2000/WINXP (C) in directory //p4-2000/WINXP-(C) failed.

Any idea what happened?

I run linux on an IBM PC Server 330 and there are interrupts that go that high.

Can anyone decipher the error messages above?

"unable to open the credentials file"

No, I don't have any idea what it means, but I'd bet money that either Google (www.google.com) or G4L (www.google.com/linux) do...

-Did you ever get the IP addresses sorted out?
