What kind of system is it? Have you tried using sndconfig? Do you have problems on boot-up when the modules loads?

Run a mixer program (like gmix) and turn everything up to the highest. Has the soundcard worked previsouly? If you dual boot (with Windows for example), does the sound work there?

Well since I was at his house trying to help him get it working, I'll explain some. He has a SB AWE 64 and the installation had AWE drivers that we installed. I confirmed that the module for it was loaded into memory after booting. We opened gmix and turned the volume up to no avail. When you try to play an mp3 in xmms, it just stops. It doesn't give an error though. And we tried to play a cd and there was no sound. I didn't think to try sndconfig because I didn't even think it was on Debian.

Ok I agree it should probably be the sound config file. I am a complete newbie to Debian, so if any body has any suggestions on how to go about doing this please don't hesitate.
