What are the differences between Afterstep and Windowmaker?
Hopefully one of them suits my needs:
-Highly customizable looks
-intuitive behavior (and at least some ability to modify it)
-Virtual Desktops (not workspaces, I want to be able to scroll my mouse off the screen onto a new desktop)
-Efficient and quick way to launch apps (either an easily customizable root menu, or whatever)
-Smart Window Placement
-Eye Candy! I have tons of horsepower, and want to put it to good use. I'm sick of looking at .01% cpu usage.
Afterstep and Windowmaker seem so similar, and I think at least one of them meets all of the criteria above, what sets them apart.

Actually, I think you're talking about Enlightenment ;)
AS and WM are very similar. WM has been very popular, but IIRC AS includes a few extra features. Probably best to try them both and see which fits best.
WM has a better graphical setup app, IIRC, whereas Afterstep still uses text file config.

This was missing on my version of Slack 8.1 (WM's config preferences). However, it's pretty straight forward to edit the ~/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker file. :)

Well I'm on enlightenment now (got sick of the small things wrong with waimea, no smart window placement, some segfaulting, etc), and it's not 100% smooth. Dragging large windows sometimes is a bit 'laggy', and I'm on a high horsepower machine (I have lots of the eyecandy on). Plus I don't like the dragbar up top (and I'm not sure how to get rid of it). Plus I don't need extra desktops, all I really need is a 2x2 or 3x3 grid of screens to work with, and the ability to 'scroll into them.' AFAIK blackbox and fluxbox have workspaces, not oversized virtual desktops. Maybe openbox? That's also something Afterstep has I know, but I don't want to give up screen space to appicons and such. I have a 19" on 1600x1200 now, and I want MORE space than that, so I don't want to give up any.
