After a few days of trying I finally got Q3 to run on my mandrake 8 machine, but it is extreamly particular about how it runs. Q3 will ONLY run if I log in as root (I need to find out why and fix this).using "su" to become root in the console doesn't work only logging in Also, and this I think is quite strange, Q3 will only run from the cd rom ie "mnt/cdrom then sh quake3.sh". Running it from /usr/local/games/quake3 results in a uii386.so cannot open shared object file error. Q3 does run pretty good but I don't like logging in as root and I can't run any mods if I play from the CD, so if someone can help me I would be in their debt.

Hmm... I still get the same error with that. For the root thing.. could the GL drivers just not be in my path or something? Maybe I should reinstall quake...

I just installed q3 today, my first attempt was running it off of a quake 3 folder on a networked drive via smb on top of an already installed q3 for windows, rather unusual setup and no surprise I got the uii386.so problem. Never bothered to trouble shoot it.
So I simply followed the instructions in the INSTALL file for the 1.29h linux patch which said to install the patch to an empty directory, then copy over the pak0.pk file from either another quake3 install or from the cd to the baseq3 directory. It worked fine. I then copied over the key file so I didn't need to type in the key either. Quake3 runs amazingly well in Linux and the mouse felt very smooth (mouse smoothing turned off).
