Hi there,

This is pretty much a strange question, especially for all you people with 2 good hands. One of the things I don't like about Linux, and all Unix (command driven) OS's is that you have to type. No, wait, don't flame me yet, let me explain. I like putting in commands to open a file, to copy a file etc etc, but when compared to point and click on Win, its tourture! I am wheelchair bound and can only use 1 hand, and it gets pretty tired quickly. I know that you can use one of the squillions of wm on Linux, but I kinda like using the command line, sometimes its just too damn cool to throw away. If I am to continue to use Linux/Unix all my life, I have to find an easier way to input my commands other than using a mouse and keyboard. The one piece of gadget that still works for me like any other 'normal' (what is it anyway) human being is my VOICE! So my question, is there any tool that I can use to enter commands into BASH (or other terminals) using my voice. Is there an open source project like the sort going on? How good is it?

I did a quick search on www.freshmeat.net (http://www.freshmeat.net) and came up with CVoiceControl. I havent used it nor do I know much about it but it does sound like something that could help you out. Give it a look. http://www.kiecza.de/daniel/linux/

here is a link from Linux.com that contains links to different speech related software projects... http://www.linux.com/links/Software/Speech/

also here is a link to a speech recognition HOWTO on the linux documentation project: http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Speech-Recognition-HOWTO/index.html

hope this helps!

Thanks Jeepsta, Cotfessi.
I am going to check out the links you gave me. I am going to try those apps in the coming month or so. I'll post back my experience with them soon.

Once again, thank you guys. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

IBM has released ViaVoice for Linux, but I'm not sure if it's free or not ...

Thanks for that info Strike, I'll check out the IBM pages. Would it take voice to input into BASH etc? Will it be wm specific, ie only KDE or GNOME etc

I'm 99.9999% sure it doesn't matter. One of the other people on my project this summer was using it, and he uses twm (*cringe*). So, I'm pretty sure it's command-line based.

Thanks Strike.
So cool, you work for Nasa?
Have you heard of something called Genetic Progamming, Genetic Algorithms? (sorry to repeat GP and GA, i did mention this in other post, i think)

Well, mostly worked for NASA. That was this past summer, and I'm continuing work on it right now, but only until this summer when I begin doing who knows what... after all, I'm still a lowly college student (just a smidge between high school student and primordial ooze on the evolutionary ladder)

But, no GP and GA weren't real big in the RAL (Robotic Architecture Laboratory), though I did hear you mention them in some other post somewhere. Sorry.
