HOW TO UPGRADE KDE3.1 FOR SuSE 8.1

Complete Install On KDE 3.1 after downloading takes 1 hr to install it all.

Doing the downloads on a 56k takes 10 hrs in microsoft - 18 under linux dont ask Y thats dummm...

I found it was best to do my downloads in Microsoft for I could select all file and Drag them to the file I made called c:/linux/suse/kde3.1 to burn on a CD for back up but being a newbee I didn’t now how to do this in linux so this was my way.

1. Make a file to save your down load to or send it to your CD burn
2. Go to ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/kde/stable/3.1/ and pick your software – suse – ix86 – your version (x.x) now select all files and drag them to you made up file(c:/linux/suse/kde3.1) the download has started (be sure that your modem is set to reconnect in case it drops before completing)
3. Start up SuSE 8.1 and do a back up of your system don’t ask me how….because I did this as a clean install..
4.Insert you new CD you maid or you may go right into windows form linux and open /linux/suse/kde3.1 know you must do this in the right order or your new kde 3.1 will have problems !!!!
5.You will install all of the files by clicking them and YaST better come up or you need to find out Y it didn’t because SuSE is going to do all the installs for you (QT) files first then (Arts) then (kdelibs) then (kdebase) do them in order starting with qt3-3.1.1 and down the list (there are 10 files) when completing QT start with arts-1.1-49 and down the list (there are 3 files) then kdelibs3-3.1-46 (there are 4files) then kdebase3-3.1-51 (there are 7 files) the rest of the files do not mater the order you load them.. When completed reboot the system and your good to go when you log in it should come up KDE 3.1

There are 2 files with Dependency Conflicts 1 is kdeaddons-sound-3.1-46 and the other is kdepim3-kpilot-3.1 missing files libatlantic.so.1 / libatlantikui.so.1 / libpisock.so.8 are looking for them….

NOTES:

On the install YaST will come up on some files and show Dependency Conflicts now you will need to take some time and read them because you will need to force or remove the old files I pick to remove the old files I think this is best but again this is one mans opinion ..Just DO NOT UNINSTALL ONE OF THE NEW FILES WATCH IT WILL GET YOU LOLOLOL.

I hope this helps all of you have a great day and enjoy your new KDE3.1

NO PMS PLEASE I’m just to green for helping other then this:

Thanks Steve.

I will give it a try on Suse tonight or tomorrow.

RedHat network will have them soon, then you can use the update app to get them.

That would be great for I like Redhat alot better even if loading things in suse is easy / SuSE is a great place to start as a total newbee... it has most drives in there package and a sxxt load of progams you can pick other then the OS...

Moving over to the 'How I did it' forum.

I installed the KDE3.1 SuSE 8.1 rpms on SCO Linux (UnitedLinux) as I explained in one of your threads on upgrading to KDE3.1.

I had to install in a specific order, but it all worked.

Mine didn't work.

Everytime I try to use YAST to update it grabs the old file and runs it.

Everytime...

I click on the new file in the directory, it asks for my root password, the YAST pops up and grabs the old file( not the one I clicked on) and uses it to update.

i.e. qt3-3.1.1-15 is clicked on and YAST uses qt3-3.0.5 to run the update.)

I'm more confused that I started with.....

The 1st rpm I tried to install YaST2 came up and showed me a file that was highlighted in red from the add & remove files selection of YaST2. What does that mean?

Today I just did an upgrade to KDE 3.1 and just downloaded the RPMs off SuSE's website... the base ones (about 40MB) and installed it on the command line, took like a minute.
