I'm using rehat 8 and i'm trying to compile a pctel modem driver. I get an error after compiling which says "pctel is compiled with gcc 2 and your kernel is compiled with gcc 3". The gcc compiler i have is 3.2 so what is the problem.

I've tried a force install (insmod -f pctel) but then get another error about GPL licences. Anyone knows what should i do next.

Check the Redhat support/bugzilla site as I believe this is a known problem and hopefully they have a resolution posted.

ok i have the same problem and i can't seem to find a solution at redhat or bugzilla. I used to have it working with an older version of the driver and redhat 7.3 so i know it should work.

could anyone please post a link to some sort of documentation on this bug(if that's what it is)

ok, this seems to be a fairly useful link, i skimmed over it as i was installing rh 6.2 (hey at least it's stable) on my other computer.

i would think it wouldn't have anything to complain about if you recompiled your kernel with gcc2
(if a 2.4 kernel will compile with gcc2) I'm sure the solution is right on the tip of my fingers ;-) but i can't find it so i'm just going back to a 2.2 kernel, i don't need anything fancy it's just going to be a server anyway.

There are distros out there that still use gcc 2.95, so your drivers should compile on one of those. Or just get gcc 2.95 somehow and recompile your kernel.

ok i went back to rh 6.2 and the modem works again...unfortunately my ethernet card no longer works because tulip.o won't insmod...i've found extensive complaints but no real solutions.

so i'm going back to slackware 9

this seems useful, although i swear i tried to force it and it didn't work, it's worth another try...maybe it will just all automagically fall into place...i refuse (read can't afford) to buy a hwcontrolled modem.
