best chess program

so what in your opinion(s) is the best linux/open source chess program?

I don't know of any myself though you can try searching Google for Linux, freshmeat.net etc. as I'm sure you will find lots of choices.

As to which is the best. ??? See if you can find comments from other chess program users on G4L.

I use xboard in gnome. I installed it as part of Mandrake so that was very easy.

It's a simple interface and the AI is good enough to beat me everytime. (Not that that says much!) It does lack options though.

If anyone knows of a simple email chess app, especially a cross platform one, I'd be interested to hear about it.

sorry mr google, i should have been more clear. it wasn't a matter of not knowing where to look. i was just wondering if there where any raving suggestions of must try chess apps as i figured there would be plenty of them out there.:p

Since only one other member replied, I guess my suggestion to search G4L to see if you could find comments/recommendations from chess program users kinda makes sense now, doesn't it? :D

Xboard is a great choice if you want to get online and play chess against other people. It is supported by the biggest online chess communities, the Internet Chess Club ( http://chessclub.com/ ) and the Free Internet Chess Server ( http://www.freechess.org/ ).
