Ciao I`m_newbie:( Artimus 02-17-2003, 04:36 PM You could, but I doubt you'd get very far. This is UNIX based OS's, such as BSD, Irix, HP-Ux, Solaris. Windows is, or at least was based on DOS. God knows what it is by now. El_Cu_Guy 02-17-2003, 07:59 PM Originally posted by Artimus You could, but I doubt you'd get very far. This is UNIX based OS's, such as BSD, Irix, HP-Ux, Solaris. Windows is, or at least was based on DOS. God knows what it is by now. That's kind of a silly thing to say isn't it? You have DOS based Windows and NT based Windows (NT, 2000, and XP). Do a little research into history. Once upon a time the US government would not grant any government contract unless the company had a UNIX offering. Microsoft was able to under bid for contracts with Windows NT. How? Well, it all had to do with the governement misleading definition of Unix. Unix=POSIX As NT had a POSIX layer it could be classified as Unix. Also this forum is EXTREMELY misleading as it's called Other Unix-Based OS's. Oddly enough some of the OSes covered in this forum are not UNIX-based. BeOS is a perfect example. UNIX-based would mean it were based on official UNIX system source code. xulfralos 02-18-2003, 10:18 PM Perhaps they should rename this forum to 'Alternative OSes besides Linux'. No, Windows 98 does not qualify... Go find a Windows forum. jeffreyw 02-18-2003, 10:44 PM and what if you use both? is that okie???:p El_Cu_Guy 02-19-2003, 11:51 AM Sure it's OK if you use "both" (I assume you're referring to Windows and GNU/Linux). It's not like someones gonna show up at your house and... jeffreyw 02-19-2003, 08:18 PM yea i use both windows98 and mandrake 9.0 just because i still learning how to install things(trust me im a big newb):) sharth 02-19-2003, 08:22 PM you'll probably get less answers. some people here are a smidge nutty. It i have the answer that you need, then what do i gain by holding that answer from you. so i tell answers for anything that i can help with. More linux based as far as I know. and I don't know how crazy the forum change has made this board. elderdays 02-21-2003, 01:31 PM Just ask your question dude. Artimus is just 13 and probably pretty bitter right about now. Just kidding Artimus. Yes, this is a Unix-Based OS forum, but we don't know exactly what his question was. It could have been something about Cygwin on Win98 for all we know. justlinux.com
