first if you dont want to run windows games, but only apps, goto www.codeweavers.com (http://www.codeweavers.com) and dl their version, it has a nice installer & config util. try that one first.

well, what kind of games do you want to run ?
opengl games work, almost all, you need the normal wine, and you have to compile it with opengl support like configure --enable --opengl

VMWare is good if you want to run windows, its not bad...anyways, its sooooooo slow.
I went out an picked myself up a copy of Win4Lin 3.0, and beleive me when i say it is fast. it runs windows 95 and 98 almost as fast as they run natively. It can be a bit more fiddley to get running, but if you have a mainstream commercial distro like redhat, drake or suse, you should have no worries at all.
the download version is all you really need and it runs at about 70USD i think.
Much faster than vmware, but you can only run win95 98. vmware will run most OS's from freeebsd to even linux within linux.
