linux fileserver on windows network

I was wondering if someone could help a newbie like me know what the easiest way to use a linux box as a file server on a network for m$ machines to use. Basically I thought maybe I could install redhat and have a vfat partition and somehow share it so that the windows machines could use it to save files to. Please help with suggestions.
