I have 2 ethernet cards in my mandrake 8 box, eth0 has cable modem and eth1 is to my hub. If I leave the modem plugged in and boot the pc, httpd and httpd perl fail. Why is this? If I unplug the modem and boot nothing fails. Eth0 is set to enable dhcp. It also sets the name of my pc to the dhcp server of my isp. Why and how can I change this?
As you can see I know very little about linux and any help is greatly appreciated.

I was having the same problem, httpd/httpd perl wouldn't start up with init.d, but if I tried starting it manually after everything then it would start up fine. I never did figure it out but since I went to a newer kernel it hasn't happened again but I've only booted a couple times so I may of just been lucky.
My setup is two nics, eth0 goes to a private network, eth1 goes to the wan via dhcp so our setups are similar.
Oh well Mandrake 8.1 will be out soon enough and then we'll have some new problems to complain about :-)

Yes, my situation seems the same. After booting and having httpd, httpd fail, I can type the ip of the dhcp configured nic and get the default http page. So I guess that this is just a fluke?

I had this problem until I figured out that despite the fact that I had selected apache to be installed, a few crucial pieces of it escaped Mandrake's category based installer. I went with a flat list of package, and selected every bit of apache and then selected PHP, all of a sudden all these apache packages came up as being NOT INSTALLED!
I clicked OK to install them and since then not a problem firing up httpd at boot.
