So what's the easiest way for me to completely upgrade from KDE 3.0 to KDE 3.1 on Mandrake 9.0? I'm still just a newbie, so try please to keep it simple. :)

Go to Configuration -> Packages -> Software Sources Manager Add a new FTP source: URL: ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/Mandrake-devel/cooker/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS.cooker relative path: ../base/hdlist.cz Disable all the other sources (the cds and updates) and enable the one you just added. Now update. This will take a while since it needs to download a 20 meg config file. Once thats done, go to Configuration -> Packaging -> Install Software. View by groups and choose KDE3.1 under "desktop management" or something like that. This should take care of all the dependencies for you. Afterwards, you might want to re-enable all the other sources and disable the cooker. The cooker is basically where all new software is. It hasn't passed Mandrake's test for stability yet. (not to say its not stable, just they haven't test it/tested it long enough yet) http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/cookerdevel.php3 Chaos_Da_Ferret 02-20-2003, 12:48 AM Originally posted by Puloxor Get it out of the cooker. Where exactly is the CONFIG option, and all that? Dutch_64 02-20-2003, 05:47 PM Puloxor , maybe u know this .. what would we gain from updating to 3.1 ? is it better or maybe faster ? and can the whole deal be reversed , i mean can i go back to 3.0.5a ? which runs fine on my mdk 9 distro . the_darkhorse13 02-21-2003, 02:19 AM To start, I don't think it would be such a good idea if you updated to 3.1. Why? Because when you start getting things from the Cooker, you'll end up downloading heaps more packages to satisfy the Cooker dependencies. But if you have the bancwidth and time, then go for it.... In the Mandrake Control Center: Go down to "Software Management". Click on "Software Sources Management". There you should see a list of your Mandrake CD's. To the right click on "Add...". A new window will pop up asking you what the sources are. Check "FTP server". Now as Puloxor mentioned earlier, the URL and hdlist (it gives a discription of what youre downloading) will need to be entered: Name: Cooker FTP Path: ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/Mandrake-devel/cooker/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS.cooker Relative path to synthesis/hdlist: ../base/hdlist.cz Hope that helps. Anyways you won't have too much longer to go until 9.1 is out, I think April actually. good luck!:) Dutch_64 02-21-2003, 02:31 AM well , i tried to update and it was a 766 Mb package download and after that some errors and conflicts and then back to 3.0.5 :) i'll wait for 9.1 :) Linx 02-21-2003, 05:41 AM I get an error msg saying Cannot update the medium, the medium will be disabled. Any workaround? Other than this method, can i install the Cooker rpms found from rpmfind.net? KDE3.1 is not there, but i am saying generally can this be done. Dutch_64 02-21-2003, 02:02 PM u sure u got hdlist right ? with the .cz at the end ? hdlist.cz <-------- rustyml 02-21-2003, 03:01 PM I tried updating to 3.1 and got that same error message about the medium and I typed in the hdlist right. :( dungscooperdave 02-21-2003, 03:27 PM Originally posted by Dutch_64 i'll wait for 9.1 :) It looks like it's coming soon, so I think I will just wait too. :) garethrussell 02-21-2003, 03:35 PM Its all just one big pain in the a$$. Ive downloaded some of the source but frankly dont understand the instructions. It would be really great if someone could put em down in good ol' newbie speak for the undeducated and confused among us. Anyone up for it? And as a side note, im on a 56K so i get auto disconnected every two hours making an ftp download impossible. Since it will not resume from where i started. So im fubared. DigiExt 02-21-2003, 05:40 PM I ran the install just as was suggested in this thread by using urpmi. I was able to get it to install without any error messages, but after that my system was totally hosed. I was not able to start X or kde. My rpm database would give me seg faults when I tried to install or uninstall. Overall it was hosed and I ended up reinstalling totally to fix things. I would highly recommend waiting until the next release of Mandrake. Hopefully this will save someone some pain. Linx 02-21-2003, 08:44 PM Holy sh**!! Tough luck dude Digi, but thanks for the advice. It will definitely save a lot of newbies like me headaches! Meanwhile, for the impatient, if u just wanna see how kde 3.1 keramik looks like in 3.0, try installing the skin keramik (http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/209840/idpa/209840) Pretty cool, beats kde2 default hands down :D dungscooperdave 02-22-2003, 07:10 PM Thanks for the link to that keramik theme. It's the most awesomest theme. Well, either that or acqua. I haven't quite decided yet... rustyml 02-22-2003, 07:43 PM Hey, I downloaded and installed that keramik theme successfully (I hope). How do i set that theme now?? Thanks!! :) justlinux.com
