Just a long shot, but have you tried to boot from floppy, with boot/root disk?

If that is possible, you can still install.
It has helped me before, even if I didn't find out what actually caused it.

I have had a few odd problems with some cheaper cdrom drives before. In my experience, the autodetect sequence in the bios always goes for the fastest the drive is capable of. When I start having install problems, I go into the bios and knock the mode down a notch or two just for the install. It makes for a slightly slower install but at least I have always been able to complete it. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

You might try this just to see if it helps. After the install, set the drive back to how it was. I never seem to have problems at the higher setting during normal usage. Go figure...

the cdrom i use to install is a dvdrom

pioneer 113 model i think (from memory)

this may be affecting it, but all other distros i have work fine with it.

like nalleberg said just make the 2 install floppies and see if that works.Odd thing for me is that neither 7.0 or 7.1 cds were bootable on any of my machines.
