I'm thinking about switching distros from mandrake 8.0 to suse 7.1, i've actually made an attempt once before with older versions but suse seemed to want to make my already kinda poopy monitor even poopier by giving me 2 1 1/2 inch black lines on the top and bottom of the screen.
My reason for switching is that i think mandrake is a little too picky on some commands, i tried making a friend a shell account and it was such a pain because mandrake wasn't accepting most of the commands i was giving it.

Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks in advance :]

Mandrake and suse are pretty similar
1 big advantage about suse is yast and yast2 as well as sax and sax2
i am suse user and have tried mandrake which i feel is 2nd best overall

are you sure u are not doing something wrong in your commands as both distros seem to use same command sets

i shouldnt think swapping distros because of commands not doing what you want is reaosn enough

what commands were you trying, and mandrake 8 has a gui for setting up additional users anyway

I started on SuSE and have since tried RH, MDK and now Debian (if I can ever get it to work). SuSE looks like a good choice - it is the only one I have tried so far which got the display absoloutely right for my aging PC. Also whilst Yast is still technically a graphical manager it doesn't feel as dumbed-down as mandrake. Only problem was with package management, in that for rpms it wouldn't install a lot of the binaries I downloaded. Someone else here said that SuSE only use rpm version 3 whereas RH (and MDK?) use version 4. So if you want to try out lots of software you may be disappointed. Also my version of Sax2 (for configuring X) is very buggy and has rendered my system inoperable - but I think this is a conflict with the nvidia drivers that's now been resolved (will try it out tonight with latest version).

No probs compiling black box from source, however :) me happy.
