just as the subject says, I'm using a regular 56k dialup through the phone line and I have been getting complaints that no one answers the calls in our house. They hear it ringing from their phones but it makes me wonder why because I'm currently online at the time they called. They should hear busy signals instead but still it rings for them.

Maybe there's an app for this? sorry for the n00b question, I don't know exactly what to enter in google/linux. Any special hardware I need?

Well, I would think unless you have call waiting or call fowarding then you should get a busy signal.

There are modems that can detect the call waiting beep. You can then put the modem on hold while you answer the other call.

hmmm I have a generic V.90 56k modem but I'm not exactly sure if it can detect call forwarding beeps, my friend also told me that I could have call forwarding.
problem is how do I do it?

If you can find a V.92 modem somewhere that works with Linux, you can put the modem call on hold with it. I don't believe standard V.90 modems can do that (though I could be wrong).

The upside of these devices is that they don't care what kind of modem you have, nor does it matter what operating system you have.

This Google search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=modem+%22call+waiting%22) will give you some options.

thanks DMR: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~michael/icm/
I'm not sure how this one works, I compiled it, executed it and then it asks for a 10 digit number and a password. 10 digit? password?? I only have a 7 digit telephone number, and umm, password?? what password??

I just copied the 920/ thingy from the tel number in there, I don't know what's the missing digit here, since I know I only have 7. Hmmm, so it just goes like this and ... that's it, just stays there.

Um, it looks like the program you downloaded isn't a stand-alone solution; it's just a client program for InfoInterActive's ICM (http://www.internetcallmanager.com/). You'll have to check the ICM website to see how to set things up. By the way, it doesn't look like a free solution; there's a Windows trial program, but in the end you'll have to pay for the service.

If you look in the front of your local phone book, you will find the code to temporarily deactivate Call Waiting (i.e. this call only). Stick it in front of your IPS phone number and anytime you are online, they will get a busy signal.

If you are not getting kicked off when someone calls in then the modem detects, handles and currently ignores the call waiting beep. Older modems don't handle it and the connection drops. Pissed my wife off with her computer (older modem) until I showed her how to run CW off.

I see, I'm not signed up for the service so I think I'll just disable call waiting as hlrguy suggested, Thanks :)
