i have been trying for a couple of hours now but nothing. i am running redhat 8.0 with all the latest updates on a 350mhz pentium 2 with 512mb ram and a onboard 8mb video.

i tried to install the optimized packages but for some reason or the other it can't see the mplayer default skin package even though this is the package i would try to open but it keeps telling me that that particular package can't be found.

Is this install such a problem because of my low end system? Or would be easy to use apt to install and if i do use apt how come it gives a error when you use the apt-get install <mplayer package name>?

how is this suppose ot be done correctly to give a problem free install?

Try installing synaptic, which is a GUI for apt. Also make sure you have the latest sources.list. Then just fire up synaptic, select mplayer from the list, & you are done, except for installing codecs. Get them here:
