Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : xmms wont start anymore
hi guys having a strange problem with xmms, used to work fine, but then all of a sudden i couldnt open it anymore, sometimes it "opens" and the icon appears in the taskbar but i cant close it short of a kill command. I tried unmerging it (using gentoo), then re-emerging it, that didnt work. I also tried emerging an older version in its place with the same problem... can anyone help me please?
run it from a terminal and see what errors (is any) get printed out in the terminal.
post them if possible.
no errors, just this:
lomi $ xmms
Available CPU flags: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow
and when i run it from the terminal, it doesnt show up in the taskbar at all

Did you activate a plugin that xmms can't handle? Has happened to me in my neverending quest to get everything I can ever find working. I usually just manually edit the ~..xmms/config file.
Try hiding xmms directory and see if it will start.
mv .xmms .orig_xmms
it will then think you are running for the first time and recreate the .xxms dir.

Hmm... this forum is really for How I Did It, not How Do I Do It. ;)
Follow me over to Software Related, everyone! :p
But yeah, moving the .xmms directory in your home directory to some other name might help. When you run it from a terminal, the xmms process becomes a child of the shell you're using, so it doesn't get its own taskbar entry. That's fine.
oops sorry, my bad.
and thanks for the idea, ill give that a shot :)
nope that didnt work, but at least now i dont have to force close it, just tries to start up, fails and times out (closes)
still no errors when i run it in the terminal either :(

uninstall, then install it again.
