do you think that a 486sx/40 will be sufficient enough of a machine to build a firewall?? What would you guys suggest as a minimum hardware specification?

I run a 486 50Mhz with 20 Meg of RAM (used to have 16 ran fine, I had the RAM , so I threw it in). It has a 280 Meg drive (uses about 60), no keyboard or monitor, I use telnet to administrate it. Runs Slack 4.0 , but I'm going to current and maybe 2.4.1 this week. It had an uptime of 70 days last week, until I had to shut it down to use it to do any slack install on a HD. That HD is currently in a 386 SX with 4M RAM, too little RAM for the install, will run normally. That machine has a BOGOMips of 1.5 !

Basically 486 is fine, try and have at least 12 M RAM though.

The install I used is called Tiny Linux, a floppy based version of Slack 4.0 that will install using about 20 floppys. Useful when you have no CD

I'll post the link when I get home tonight
