I downloaded all the files (1.11 gb) from an ftp server to my harddrive (in Windows).
Then when i boot with the bootfloppy i made (hd.img) it starts up and asks where it should get the files from choice is: hda1, hda2, hda3 + hda4. When i click hda1 it says it can't find a file tree ???
I made a folder ic C: withe the name mandrake in ther three subfolders with RPMS, base and mdinst.
What am i doing wrong ?

I don't know if the problems comes because of that, but maybe the bootdisk doesn't support fat file systems ...

It should work...I installed Mandrake 7.2 a least a half-dozen time from the hd.img bootdisk and all the files residing on a FAT32 disk.
Do you have multiple hard drives, if so, make sure you know which one is hda1, hda2, etc..
Otherwise, make a folder in the Windows C: drive (say C:\DrakeInst) then copy all of the contents of the Mandrake/ and images/ directories into C:\DrakeInst.
Boot from the hd.img and when it asks for Mandrake, select the appropriate drive (hda1 or whatever) and type in the path DrakeInst/Mandrake/ ... that *should* work.
Good luck

Well, i placed all the files in a folder named Mandrake on the C drive (hda1, but it says: hda1 doesn't appear to have a valid installation tree...

Is the tree layout exactly as it is on the ftp? - Just a passing thought :)

and a folder with the base system
You mean images/ right??
Make sure that you have everything under the ftp directory Mandrake/ not just the rpms/ folder ( so this would include base/ and mdkinst/ )
Maybe you have already done this...if so...hmmm
-edit---
If you have a fast internet connection, you could still install Mandrake from an .iso that is on the hard drive

Are there no instructions on Mandrake's site?

Can i install the iso file directly from my harddrive ?
I have never done it, but I remember seeing an option come up during the Mandrake Installation.
Try reading this http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/faq/faqw.py?req=show&file=faq06.011.htp
There is WinImage 5.0 (if you are running windows) that allows you to extract an .iso like it was a .zip file then I guess you would boot into the DOS promt and run install.bat (if that exists).
Hope this helps

Well, i downloaded everything again from the ftp site Mandrake>base>mdkinst>RPMS
I made a new boot floppy but still nothing.
It ask where the installation tree is , i choose hda1 (where i know it is), then when i type the directory "Mandrake" it says it can't find an installation tree just base, mdkinst, RPMS and some more ?????
When i don't type in the directory but just leave it on hda1 it goes to "loading second stage ramdisk" and the it says :
Install exited abnormaly -- received signal 9
sending termination signals...done
sending kill signals...done
unmounting filesystems
you may now safely reboot your system
Am i crazy or is there something wrong with the Mandrake instructions ??

hmm..?
Just to make sure, how did you download these files? Like which operating system? browser? etc.
Sometimes downloading via FTP by ascii or binary format can make a difference, but that generally applies to .iso files. Also, if you were using IE 5 with browsing enhancements and just "copied" and "pasted" the folders onto your drive, that may mess up the file extentions.
But...
I honestly don't know what is wrong. You can only make sure that the directories are exactly like they are on FTP (case sensitive, cotains all the files, right extentions).
If all fails, get someone to donate the CD
:)
Again, hope this helps.
****edit****
Did you also download the images/ directory (usually under ../7.2/i586/images/ )
