Is there a site that has an objective comparison of all different Linux distributions, with their respective strengths, weaknesses and features?
I'm using Mandrake 8.0. While the installation was easy and all the utilities I need are there, I feel it's a little bloated and the package installation/removal a little convoluted. There's too much RPM crap, and I end up just dumping tarballs into directories instead of using RPM.
Also, if you have an opinion about your favourite distribution, and arguments as to why others should use it, please feel free to post.
i will say both Mandrake & Redhat can be bloated IF you choose to let it get bloated, i choose only one GUI (KDE) and leave out as much i can do without, like since Koffice is included with KDE i can leave it out, but since i prefer Koffice to Sun's StarOffice i use Koffce instead...
now the smallest i ver got a Linux Redhat 7.1 install is about 650 megabytes, that is still bigger than a Win95 which is a slim 130 megabytes after a clean install and Win98se which is 190 megabytes after a clean install, but my brother's copy of WinME is close to 1 gigabyte after a clean install which is bloated for sure, and Win2k which is about 650 megs after a clean install...
i just reccomend to trim all you can during install select the option to select indivijual packages and uncheck as mush as you can do without...

I use Red Hat 7.1. It can be as big or as little as you want it to be. They package a lot of stuff like RPM managers, configuration control panel's, etc. But you can safely take all of this out and be left with a distribution like Slackware. I just like the option of it being there. If I don't know how to set up something myself, I let Red Hat do it for me, then I edit the configuration file directly.

Yes. There are a few.
if you dislike RPM's, as i very much do, Debian is probably the distro for you. debian's apt-get is deffinitly the most convenient thing i've come across since first starting with computers (regardless of OS). Debian installs light and requires you know how to build the system you want, but after a little time studying MDK you oughta be ready for it :)
