Ok, here we go... This will be my first time installing from a download! I NEED Help with it too.. First off, I do have the speed connection, and second/... Which one would really be nice to have on my system? Debian or slackware? No distro war, just upstepping from mandrake. Remember system is for everyday use. Also need to listen to my mp3's :). Also what files do I need to download? I have no cd burner... need the help.

I have not used slack but debian is a good one as you only have to install the base system and get everything else as and when you need it.
If you have the speed and the disk space why not get both ISO's and install them both :)

Just re-read your post - no burner.
Debian can be installed from the hd or floppy. Check Debian's site for info on installing from floppy or FAT partition :)

i am not sure if this will work, but if you get a program called WinImage (just get from download.com) you can extract all the files from the .iso files and install from HD

actually you can download the iso to your HD and then use a program to make get that ISO into a usable format. From there you can do an install from Hard Disk if I am not mistaken....
Even better....get the boot disks for the specific distro and do an FTP install....may be a little hard if you are using a NIC that requires the tulip driver. I cant do FTP installs, or anything online without using the 2.4's tulip driver

Huh? That sounds like a winblows program. Just get the iso, mount it as loopback (mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop0 /path/to/image /mount/point) and copy the stuff to a HD partition then install from there.

wtf does that mean? im a newbie, just like him i guess. in one ear out the other.
Either distro can be d/l and installed from hd, but Debian is the only one of the two that offers a network install. What I would recommend, if you have a fast connection and about 1.5 - 2 gb free disk space, is create a dedicated partition just for holding distros. Then you can create the bootdisks, install from hdd and try either.
Download the following dirs to hdd to install.
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-7.2/slakware (about 400mb)
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-i386 (about 120mb)

I heard you can only download ISO's on a 14.4 modem otherwise they don't work. So, just to be sure don't forget to slow down any net connection you may have to that speed. :p
