I'm looking for ppl like myself who are up and coming (or consider themselves so :)) programmers that would be interested in forming a peer evaluation group.
A group that would test/look at your program, give feature ideas, feedback, etc.
Anyone who's interested can send an email to
d_fischer1 at hotmail.com
or post here if you like this idea, or think it's absolutely retarded. Let me know.

I like the idea. But I have just started programming, so I shouldn`t be much help, yet.

I have actually been looking for something along those lines for a while. Although I'm not currently working on any particular project. Perhaps even small joint projects would be an idea in conjunction with peer review.

Newbies are most welcome, as we all have to start somewhere.
I'm hoping a few more ppl express interest, and then we'll get it off the ground.

I'd be curious to know how you'd regulate things. Would you just set up an anonymous CVS server for people to upload to with some kind of feedback system? If so, how would you ensure everyones code gets looked at, and that it's by someone that's at least somewhat qualified to give advice on the subject (after all, bad advice is oft worse than no advice).
Or would you have people e-mail code to a set group of folks that would all look at it? And if that's the case, how would you select the group? Small groups can be easily biased, but large groups can give contradictory advice that can leave the person quite confused.
I think it's a really good idea, but it'll probably take some thought to really square away (it kind of sounds like extreme programming without the pressure).

We'd have to determine that once started. We've had an offer of a CVS already, so it's a possibility.
Basically, it's something that would have to be discussed by those interested once we've got enough people.

I'd be glad to hop in on this. I could always use a bit of practice and willing to give suggestions.

Sounds like fun - count me in.
I have about three years of shell scripting in a production environment (ksh) (add a few more years if you count scripting in linux) and I'm working on learning C++.

It does sound interesting.
I've been programming for about four years and know or have exposeure to: C/C++, PERL, Scheme, Shell Scripting (sh), Modula-3, and x86 assembly.
This might be instresting. I could be in as well. Know some bash and perl, little c, very little java.

Howdy all,
Middle of last week I spoke with the original Poster and tossed around a few ideas about getting this started. He was going on a trip over this past weekend, but I have yet to hear back. I -believe- the idea as it stands now will be a "catch all" mailing list, with a small website for signing up to the list and useful programmer links at the moment. Nothing concrete has been descided that I know of. For the time being I suppose it would be best if we could get email addresses for everyone interested so we could hold a few discussions about how exactly everyone would like to do this and what definate "This is what were going to do" guidelines drawn up. As I can't seem to get ahold of megadave I am volunteering to recieve emails/keep track of who is interested until he can be contacted. I have volunteered to get a mailing list going and I can possibly be talked into setting up a CVS repository if we get enough response. At any rate, anyone interested send an email to brett at akrios.hopto.org and I will get back to everyone with any new details/news I may have. It would be helpful, but isn't necessary, if you could put "JustLinux - Mailinglist Idea" somewhere in the subject.
Thanks,
Brett (gotenks2)

I'm back from Vegas :)
Brett, thanks for taking the reigns on this one while I was gone. Much appreciated.
It looks like we've generated enough interest to start it up, so I hope u're all sending your email addresses to brett (and brett, if u could send me a list that would be appreciated).
Some interesting things have been mentioned already here, and it's probably time to at least loosely define what we hope to do.
First off, the goal is to NOT take away from the justlinux forums as questions posted here benefit everyone.
My goal in startting this was to assemble a bunch of ppl who would be interested in offering suggestions/discussion about programs you're working on, etc, not to answer specific technical questions which would be better served by posting in the forums here.
I hope I've described that clearly, my head is a little cloudy today.
Getting more familiar
As some ppl have already begun doing, it's probably time for those interested to let us know a bit about themselves, anything they're working on, languages they're programming in, etc.
Me
Right now I'm working on a gallery ripper
for Gnome. I'm still working on different components and just started work in the GUI.
Also a work in progress is an image mapping
program for Gnome called gimagemap
http://gimagemap.sourceforge.net
My strongest languages are C & C++.
I also know PHP, Java, VB, assembler.

I replied to your e-mail, megadave. I haven't been keeping up with this thread, so I missed the call for e-mails.
A little about myself, I'm a CS undergrad with ~4 years of C/C++, and some Perl/Java/PHP thrown in for good luck.
I think it'd also be a good idea to have a web collection of the mailling list (like with the kernel mailing list) so that people have somewhere to go if they're new and want to see if a question has already been asked.

Hello again.
We're in the process of setting up the mailing
list and whatnot, so this week coming things
should be moving quite well.
We're at ~8 ppl so far who've submitted
their emails, so all looks good to go.
For anyone who hasn't sent in an email
and is interested, pm or email me and we'll
add you to this list.

I'm interested as well, but I have VERY little experience, but I'm willing to learn, though I won't be much help in the beginning, I've been programming with python for about 3 days...
