System specs? If it's linux, download a firewall of some sort from tucows and disable any daemons you don't need.

Most obvious thing to do first off is do a system "post-mortem", find out how they got in and what you may have done / not done / installed that let them in. Getting a system back to production after a break-in is debatable, but if you havent done it yet and are not sure whats involved, reinstall, secure the new system before you even go online and start over. Sorry. :(

after a box has been compromised, there's no telling if any backdoors were installed or binaries modified with trojans.

that's true...and if he's an admin, he might as well do that himself. Although, since the box was insecure in the first place, it leads me to believe he has no knowledge of ipchains or tables.
