I have a 486-66 I want to install Linux on to use as a MUD server or for running an eggdrop.

Unfortunately I can't boot off the CD so I'm having problems installing the distros I have. When I boot off of a floppy, it won't recognize the CD.

Any Debian based distros out there that could install off of a floppy and then be able to apt-get all the extra goodies? Keep in mid that I'm a newbie and I'd really like it iff the distro could configure my NIC. :)

Thanks

Why can't you see the CD when you boot from a floppy? You should be able to, that's odd. What kind of boot floppy are you using?

I am using the Storm Linux (hail) boot floppy. Even when i boot into DOS I need to make sure all my drivers are in the autoexec.bat file or else no CD. It is an old computer. :(

have you tried booting off a win98 floppy disk and starting with cd-rom support and checking to see if there is a cd-rom there.. if so, try running setup from that

The best option at this point, then, is in windoze, download the 12 or so debian floppies and install the base system from those and then use apt-get to install the rest.
It works like a charm!

ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian2.2r2/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44/

These are the images. You boot up with the resue disk. It will then ask for the root disk then select install from floppies (/dev/fd0) then it'll ask you to install the 4 driver floppies and when it comes time, you'll use the 11 base floppies to install a working system. From there you can configure ppp then use apt-get to install what you need.
