I would like to know how well 2 boxes, one a RH8.0 server and one a debian desktop, (assuming I can configure one something like the RH setup), would work with exported file systems etc. the setup is currently 2 RH boxes, server and desktop, but I would like to give debian a go, I have heard it is a good system. Anyone got anything similar or had experiences of similar, good or bad?

Thanks

You shouldn't have any issueswith the compatability of the two distros. Linux is Linux! I run a RH8 server and Debian desktop with no problems atall. Do it! :)

Thanks. I will give it a go then. Just 7 disks to d/l then. Still, better that than getting in trouble with Msoft with dodgy software from a copy of a copy of a copy etc. etc.

By the way, anything I need to be aware of in the install of debian? I have looked over their site, it looks straight forward enough.

Just download the first ISO and install the rest via ftp once you have installed. That's what I do. It's much quicker and easier :)

So, can i install from only one disk and then ftp the rest? What is installed to start with from disk 1 then?

The base system is on CD1 and a few other things, but I only have one Debian CD and have installed Debian about 6 times on different boxen with it. Once you complete the install and reboot, you can then use apt-get to grab the packages you need like apt-get install x-window-system-core to grab all the files required to get XFree86 up and running. Once you have that you can installed synaptic. From there you can browse packages to install/upgrade/remove very easily (if you prefer that to the CLI).

I looked at one of the Debian download mirror in UK and I found a couple of disk one versions, NONUS and normal. is this a non-us version or something like no-nus, if such a thing exists :) . the question is is there one specific I need?

Debian is superior to redhat.

From http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages :

Non-US/Main and Non-US/Non-Free
These packages cannot be exported from the USA, they are mostly encryption software packages, or software that is encumbered by patent issues. Most of them are free, but some are non-free.

So don't use the non-US packages in the USA is the moral of the story.

debian is a lot better than redhat... only if you know what you are doing.... i suggest Slackware though...
