after alot of toil and trouble i finally got the latest ALSA drivers installed and working well on my box. my problem is when i try to play mp3s through xmms they sound crackly. i've heard this is "just how crappy onboard sound is" and i understand that but i have a hard time beleiving my win xp can run it smoothly and linux can't. please help i have over 1000+ mp3s and this whole no music thing is killn me!! the docked kmix always starts at 0 when i start up, quake3 seems to play sounds allright. i also can't use anyything but xmms to play mp3s. anyway can anyone give me some hints here?

Why not try Noatun ? I love to hear music also while I am work on my SuSE box. I dont have as much music as you but all of my 300 smooth blues and jazz run fine. And thats with AC97 onboard sound. With alsamixer you should turn the volume down to the mittle and then use your volume control on speakers or on Noatun to raise it volume. That is how I reduce the cracking sound on some of my super old jazz jams.

As far as the Equalizer goes I would not try enriching the sound manuelly to much. Its better to use the presettings like rock, jazz, dance trance. They bring a little more enriching without destorting the sound quality.
