System: Mandrake 8.1 w/ KDE

I'm attempting to clean up my files by uninstalling unneeded 'stuff' but, when I try uninstalling certain items, a TON of other files are asked to be removed to. (I'm doing this through the Software Manager.) For example, I want to remove 'gphoto' and 'gphoto2' since I do not have or use a digitial camera. However, when I do, the Software Manager tells me that it is going to remove kdevelop and kdegraphics along with it. It also does this for things like vim, efax, and a bunch of other programs. Is it seriously removing all those files? Or, what is this? I want to clean up my system, but I don't want to destroy it in the process. Any help would be very appreciated.

see any appication that u installed mostly has to be an rpm package or a tar ball.
for an rpm package try
# rpm -e <package>
if its a tar ball then go tothe directory of the application u want to delete and try
#make uninstall

this will serve the purpose.
if make uninstall doent work then u will have to manually delete the files from (mostly) the /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin folders.
if u have a doubt if the file belongs to the particular application u want to delete then rpm man page will show u an option where in u can check if that file belongs to the rpm u want to uninstall.
read rpm HOWTO its given there i seriously dont remember it .

Well, I know how to uninstall it...it's just that, the uninstall program seems to want to take half of my system with the one file I want to uninstall. (EX: If I want to uninstall vim, it wants to take vixie-cron with it.) or (EX: If I want to uninstall gphoto2, it wants to take kdevelop and kdegraphics with it.) I'm just wondering if this is wrong, and I should just uninstall it, or what?

see, i dont think it will remove those files also with it.but why dont u take a back up ofthose files and then uninstall the thing.
even if it does u wont loose it and u will get to know whether it does or not.
a good way to learn i guess :-)

as far as my knowledge goes it wont harm anything else....
so u shud go ahead....
let me know the result pliss...

Ugh...I hate testing stuff...well, I'll wait until I'm done running a few things, back up my important files, then here goes nothing...

P.S. BTW - If anybody has any reason to stop me (AKA - I'm going to destroy my computer if I do this), please feel free too.

Uninstallation Status: Successful

Everything went fine. I think there was a glitch in my program or something because I logged out, and logged back in, and the files it said it was going to remove before, were changed to something else. So, I think it's all good.

Okay, now that I am looking deeper into my system after this whole uninstall "thing" I noticed some programs were removed that I didn't want to leave. It's not a REAL big deal...but...just something I noticed.
