Ok, this is going to be a long story so bear with me...

I've got an athlon computer,via-Kt133A chipset, one 30Gb HDD, geforce2MX, and a diamond external 56K modem. I've partitioned the hard disk, and put win98 in the first 3 partitions, and red-hat 7.0 on a 2 Gb partition. I've got X working but with some glitches.

I could only connect to the net once. After i disconnected the red hat dialer couldn't activate the interface. I noticed that one or two pppd kept working on the background. I tried to kill the processes, but after that i could never connect to the net. The modem dialed, made the connection, but when pppd started working nothing happened. It just said pppd started at ... and nothing happend.
Well, i switched to kde, and kppp worked fine, until it too failed me, it just said that pppd died suddenly. So yesterday i reinstalled linux again, and this time it didn't work from the begining. The modem was detected ok. With rh dialer, it can't activate the inteface, with kppp pppd suddenly dies. And there is still the same problem, modem busy after one connection. What the hell is going on here?? Also, xmms keeps on the background, even after i close the window, and the only way i can close it is by a kill.

Any help appreciated...
