Now I do know a fairly good amount about partitioning and formatting HDD, I just don't know what typical Linux installations do in this department. If I reformat my WinME in oblivion or I mispartition something, then I am beyond screwed. I'll be left to guessing what my OEM CDs do for this type of situation.
So if someone might be able to describe very shortly some tips on how to keep from removing Windows, I would be much more confident than if I even found an NHF entry on this.

An example might be that if my installation fails or is faulty, then will I be able to knowingly reformat just the Linux partition, or will I type fdisk somewhere, and lose everything?
i have a dualboot with Win98se & Redhat 7.1 and what i did was to make my Linux Ext2 partition & Linux Swap partition with Partition Magic first, then i put in the Redhat CD #1 in & reboot, then during install i type in "expert" and select "manually partition with Disk Druid" to designate my partitions, and just read & follow the instructions carefully and you cant go wrong, i am by no means a Linux expert but with just some common sence & a little knowledge you can be sucessfull with your objective...
HappyTrails :)

So can Druid actually make partitions, or does it just designate them? I have a feeling I'm going to be buying Partition Magic, but I'm trying not to.

...and I'll likely get Partition Magic, unless someone feels like explaining the mysterious world of DOS FIPS with WinME to me.

Im not too sure if this would apply to RH, but when I installed linux Mandrake, and when I chose expert install, I was able to set up a partition and a swap just from the screen.
All I did was resize the partition, and took the remaining space from the drive and made 4 gigs linux partition, and the remaining gig linux swap.
Im not too sure if that would work for you or not, but, good luck with it.

Try Gnu 'Parted' available at freshmeat.net as it's supposed to be very similiar to PM. A search there for parted will find it for you.

I only have 4mb. Why is 1gb swap not enough?

DiskDruid will create partitions for you. It will also delete them. The last time I used it, it was pretty straightforward about telling you which partition was being used by Windows and which wasn't. Just make sure you triple-check before you write your new partition scheme to file.

That's cool, but now I'm downloading Mandrake 8.1. :p My RH download halted and I guess I just had a change of heart. This one's moving along at a slow but steady 55KB/Sec.
I'll look at Parted.
Btw, Logon, I think 1GB is pretty enormous for a swap file partition. I'm more than likely making mine 500MB, a bit less than 2x my RAM (256MB), but still a hell of a lot more than what I know Windows (and likely Linux) usually needs.

I did that and it wasn't pretty. Just be sure to pay attention when playing with the MBR.
