Compiling Kernel

Iv compiled the Kernel 2.4 using oldconfig, and followed every single step in the kernel NHF and when i boot the new kernel i get the message:
Decompressing Kernel........ or something and that is all the machine freezes.

Ive read somewhere that i need to upgrade something like ksymoops, modutils, etc.
Is this necessary??

Read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes carefully for all the upgrade info you need.

Yes you must upgrade those utilities, I was having the same problem and after upgrading the utilities in the linux/Documentation/Changes Everything is fine.
