I installed the latest RPM version of KDE (v2.1.0) on a redhat62. I also installed all the games and other things available from KDE beyond the base installation. Top is reporting extremely high memory usage even though the only program running on the desktop is KDE. :(

Mem: 517280 av, 513528K used, 3752k free, 70820K shrd, 419336K buff.

Swap: 104380 av 5944k used, 98436K free 31148K cached.

I really like the new version of KDE but it continues to lock up my whole destop that I'm attributing to the memory management problem. When I say "lock up", I'm left with no choice but to hit the power button!

Any suggestions or recommendations how to correct this problem?

Well, figure out what processes are taking up so much mem and just kill the ones you don't need/want. ;)

From the numbers you crunched, I'd say you can probably reduce the size of the swap partition and add that to the ext2 partition and get some relief.
