I recently got my linux (suse 8.1 pro) server up and running. I use samba on it and ipmasq'ing to serve two winxp boxes. I am thinking about changing the mcahine to run as a domain server getting it to check passwords.

Do i have to modify it a lot? and is it difficult what i want to achieve?

It's not all that difficult to get Samba to act as a domain controller for your WinXP boxes. It helps a little if you've worked with domains in Windows before and understand how they operate.

I use to have my Linux server operating as a domain controller for Windows but I don't anymore. If I did, I'd post my smb.conf file here for you.

But, I do know there have been many posts on this site on how to do it. I can remember one post where a guy gave step by step instructions on how to set up Samba and how to create the domain user and machine accounts. He also gave step by step instructions on how to modify the registry so the XP Professional machines could join the domain. There is also a copy of his smb.conf file.

Do a search on 'samba pdc" or "domain controller" or something like that in this forum over the last year and you should find it. It was an excellent post and I used it to set up my domain controller.

One thing to remember, XP Professional machines can join a domain but XP Home machines can't.
