yeah, like what's the most stable linux disto? i've heard that "mandrake has issues" and that suse is better...but there are lots of people using corel and red hat. and what's with linux peanuts? i think i read something about it...
so basically...which one has a reputation for being most stable?

I've never had a problem I couldn't fix with Slackware, and it's a pretty secure distro. The developers tend to include software that's been proven pretty stable (that is, no bleeding-edge software).

 Slackware
My vote goes for Debian; I was a big Slack fan at one time but I've found after about a year of using Debian there's no comparison.

hello,
I've been using slackware for few months. Previously i've used redhat, mandrake, and then slackware. I think slackware fits me.

Not if they don't install KDE, Gnome, or some other Windows manager. :D

Hey, in Mandrake's defence, everybody's gotta start somewhere. I run Mandrake because I was attracted to how many K-based apps there were. In an effort to try and get Linux to do as much for me as my W2K box did, I went that route. It's slow and sometimes painful, but if you're going to immerse yourself into Linux, it's a start. I'm not saying it's a great distro, just that it's a start. I don't think Win9x is the most amazing thing ever written either, but it's a start to getting people connected, and it's better than a mac. Hell, put it this way, as long as people aren't using macs, I'm happy as heck.

 Slackware  lives!
i have tryed 3 boxed sets of Linux distros, Mandrake 8.0 Redhat 7.1 & Slackware 8, of these three i prefer Redhat 7.1 it seems plenty stable and is a "No Brainer" to get installed and tweaking\tuning and getting to work the way i want, and automatically configured all my hardware perfictly...
Mandrake 8.0 seemed to run just a little top heavy and just slightly buggy on my old 400 celeron, i am not saying it is a bad distro, i just think Mandrake did not like my computer which is a OEM Gateway that i done some minor hardware tweaks like adding a good but cheap graphics card 3dfx 3 3000 voodoo, and removing the 56k winmodem and replacing it with a D-Link NIC...
now Slackware is definatly not a distro for newbies unless you are quite good at manually tweaking and adjusting\editing script, i did manage to get it installed and surfed the WWW with it, i went to shields up and Slackware is a security risk with several ports wide opn unless you are good at manually tweaking the IP tables for it, as opposed to Redhat which lets you configure security settings during the install which shields up showed all ports stealthed, i am not bashing Slackweare i just want the potential Linux Newbie to be aware of what they are getting in to, for newbies i reccomend Redhat7.1 #1-- for a second choice i reccomend Mandrake 8.0 or SuSe7.2, i hear good reports as a newbie user friendly about SuSe but havent had it in my hands to give a opinion about...
so all you Linux gurus that are diehard Slackware and\or Debian users go ahead and flame me, i could care less, since this is America i am entitled to my opinion...

Slackware? Please people he said the most stable. Slack takes no chances with anything, My god do they even include the 2.2 kernel?
;)
I prefer redhat, I use it at home and at work. I have great uptimes and the dam thing never dies on me. It is a enterprise ready distro, I would say that, that makes it very freaking stable.
For Okie,
I see that you are from Ada Oklahoma. I am from Madill and Tishomingo. Currently live in Dallas but I miss the changing of the trees in Oklahoma! :(

Slackware or Debian. Both distro's are great.
Madill Tishamingo, thats right down the road from me, hi neighbor!!!
i will agree that Slackware is a very stable distro too, i still prefer Redhat for ease of use, maybe when i gain more experience with Linux' script and archetchure i will tackle Slackware again, i am not bashing Slackware= i just do not reccomend it for newbies...

Personally, Mandrake 8.0 has crashed on me repeatedly, especially when attempting to access hard drake. I switched to SuSe 7.1 and was I ever impressed......(or still am)..(pick one).

I agree, the distro's are stable, it's the bundled software that's not. Saying that, I prefer Red Hat. It can do pretty much whatever I want, whether I know how to do it or not.

Hi All!
I used to use RH 7.0 which I hear might have been buggy, but it was stable enough for me. Then I switched to Debian, which is also stable, but has the added benefit that it is stopping me from being a newbie, by forcing me to read and tweak and learn as I go. I mean Red Hat installed great and I was up and running in no time, but with Debian I had to wrestle with X window system and so on. The upside of that is that now I know the difference between X Window system, a destop manager and a window manager.
So I am getting there :D

i've run Redhat 6.2, Debian Potato, and Slackware 8.0, all of them on various hardware and with probably a dozen different kernels, and i can't say any one distro was more stable than another. redhat was GREAT for learning linux, slack is very strong and i love it, but debian is my distro-of-choice :)

I'll cast my vote +1 for Slackware, and I'll cast a +0.5 vote for Debian, and -1 full vote for Red Hat, and -0.5 vote for Mandrake.

FWIW, the most stable distro is:
The one which falls over the least.

what makes Debian better? I have used slack a few time but when I tried to use debian, it seemed to be more of a pain in the *** than slack was to install...
could you give me some insight on it?

Personally i like slackware. I've tried Debian and I absolutely hated. Like the person that posted before me said it was more of a pain in the *** for installation than anything. I know everyone says apt-get this and dselect that. I HATED them with a passion. For Mandrake, I think that it is a good distribution to make your jump from windows to linux with. However, I'll stick with slackware, my first love :)
