Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Help with external modem!
I posted a thread in the tech support section, so please excuse me for cross-threading.
I installed RH-8 and I can't get the modem configured properly. It is a US Robotics 5686E, external serial modem(hardware). It say's on the box & on USR's website that it is compatable with Linux. I have it connected to serial port 1(Com1).
I am completely "new" to Linux---but, I'm hardheaded and I will not give up!
Would someone please "walk me through this" like you were talking to a ten year old? I don't know any commands, or even where to go to enter a command.
I'm gonna have to get a good book on RH-8.
Thanks and have a good-day, I know I am, Frank :)

With which app do you want to set it up (ie, kppp, etc)? You don't really have to do any cofigs since it's external. Just point the device to /dev/ttyS0 in whichever app you use (that's Com1).
It is connected on my rig on Com 1.
How do I use kppp? I opened up a terminal window and it had this: [root@localhost root]#. I then typed "kppp" and it said "-bash : kppp : command not found".
Am I doing something fundamentally incorrect? I want to learn Linux...and get modem working and on the internet.
I installed as "workstation" using the purchased RH-8 boxed set.
Point me in the right direction, fellows.
Thanks, Frank

Yin, find the shortcut from the menus to KPPP, once u open it , you can configure your modem to work. You'll have to enter the ISP "IP" address numbers , your dialup number etc. THeres also a place to test or 'query' the modem to see if its working properly. Good luck! TonyH
Thanks for all the help!
I finally went through the kppp utility and got connected to my ISP, but...can't connect to any website or get anywhere on the net.
I clicked on the kppp connection properties and it showed a connection speed of only 1(one) kbps!
What can I possibly do now, helpers?
Give it a think for a while and if you come up with something, please post back here.
TIA, Frank :)

Ok you're getting there, go back thru the setup in KPPP and check what connection speed is set there. I had mine on 115,000
but the instructions may tell you diff. Theres also a manual for kppp in the documentation in ur distro. Warning: Linux is great, but you will have to read A LOT to learn it all. Its well worth the effort though. Unless you wanna goback to the (other) OS. good luck and let us know what happens. Tony
I (we) finally got the modem/network/internet problem fixed!
I went to Waldenbook's and purchased "Red Hat Linux 8, Unleashed" and after a few minutes was on the net and then updated my system from the RHN.
I'm using RH-8 now, instead of windowsxp, and it feels like a great accomplishment!
I'll learn this OS little by little...no, Tony I'll not go back to the other OS. I'll use it mainly to play mafia, HM2, BF1942, etc, instead I will get on the "Linux Bandwagon" that is the Future.
Thanks again for all the advice/encouragement.
Frank
