what could be causing my NIC to fail on boot up?

i have changed my NIC since the installation, but i hv also installed the correct module for it and hv configured it using the ifconfig comamnd... as root.

when i shutdown and restart my linux box it cannot find the eth0 interface and it stalls on boot up then "fails" again.

my NIC is a RealTek RTL-8029

thanks

What distro are you usings? I had no problem with RH 7 auto detecting my nic after reboot but I understand that this isn't always the case. Check to see if that nic's compatible with Linux?

distro: RH7.1

NIC: i am assuming it is compatible since i had the module already pre-packed with my distro.

Hmm, I'm still somewhat of a linux newbie. The only hardware I've set up manually so far is my sound card although I've got years of Windows experience.

Sounds like the module reference may need to be added to a config file somewhere so the OS knows how to set it up at boot?

No clue which one though, sorry.

What is your card model? (be specific, like irq, I/O Address, Model, Manufacturer, (you can gather some of this information in "cat /proc/pci" if you have a pci card)
What are the error messages in the boot? (be specific)

Are you using RedHat? If you are, RedHat offers support. Check out this page:
http://www.redhat.com/support/hardware/intel/60/rh6.0-hcl-i.ld-12.html

According to this page, your ethernet card should be supported under Tier2 (supported, and the kernel should detect it, but some people have reported problems).

Now look at this page too for the type of technical support that RedHat provides for this issue:
http://www.redhat.com/support/hardware/intel/60/rh6.0-hcl-i.ld-1.html#intro-def-tier-2

My suggestion would be to contact them.
