a non-networking person told me today that you "cannot" use a linux router to hook up non-linux boxes (eg MS windows) to the Internet.

i am assuming that he totally does NOT know what he's talking about .. why for do we hv PROTOCOLS then??

so pls someone clear this doubt for me.

the software that resides on a router will not hv any affect on the different boxes that it connects.... right?

I HAVE AN ANSWER

according to this website:
http://it.yorku.ca/moonfrog/tutorials/netshare.html

"1 computer will be configured as the Linux gateway and firewall. The other computers will be the ones sharing the Internet connection. They can be running any operating systems."

I REALLY SHOULD STOP TALKING TO CLUELESS PEOPLE!

hehe yeah, that guy was an idiot. 99 times out of 100, it isn't 'I CAN'T do this' in Linux, its 'I don't know HOW to do this in Linux'

I've got my Red Hat box running as the gateway for my Win 2k box here and, to be honest, that was the first main thing I got working on the RH box.

Give me some specific on how you'd like to set it up and I'll see what I can do to help you prove this guy wrong. ;)

i hv a windows box with win2k on it, another windose box with win98 & RH 7.1 .. that's about it so far.

and for the gw/router, i hv currently got a very old and dodgy 486, 16M RAM, 2G harddrive, 2 NICs .. that's the essentials. i am currently hving problems with installing RH on it, i'm guessing my motherboard is not compatible (i don't know what brand the motherboard is, only that its OLD)

i am planning to building a third system, but that'll only be feasible when i hv the finance to back it up with.

i've read quite a bit of literature online and i'm quite sure i'll hv no problems putting most of it together ..

(( may i just add, its hard to get info IRL, ppl tend not to take *girls* seriously when it comes to this sorta stuff ... blehh ))

i appreciate the feedback

Hehe, I haven't heard anyone use the term 'dodgy' since I was over visiting family in England.

I'm not really certain regarding the motherboard problems you think you might have. From what I've seen. Linux is very backwards compatible and generally works well (albeit slow) on systems like 486s.

I've not personally dealt with any Linux/motherboard problems as of yet so it might be best to leave the post for a bit to see what everyone else says once they get up. :)

On the whole 'dodgy' topic, where abouts are you from anyway?

Oh, on a 2 gig drive, you will want to be careful what packages you install as my RH 7 install (full) was 3 gig. Just wanted to mention that just in case.

i've bn attempting to install under 'advanced' mode, so i can pick which packages to install.. so far everything i "need" fits on the 2gig..

i'm from australia

...

thanks for the info!

Hmm, what exactly was the problem you ran into when installing?

Did you set up a Linux and swap partition? (Linux won't work on a Fat32 or NTFS file system (i believe)) If not, you'd need to use Disk Druid or Fdisk to accomplish this.

I only mention this since you said this was your first Linux install.

If this isn't the problem, where in the install did you run into problems?

If you leave out everything related to X (included) .... that means NO GUI for you, you may get that to run on a 486 with 16MB of RAM. If you can dig up more RAM, all the better.

Cheers :)
