HI
I am a newbie and I just installed Lineux Mandrake 7.2. The installation went great and it was very easy to follow. After the installation, the Aurora interface came up and saying that is booting but after that, nothing else happened. I do not see a cursor and the mouse is not working. The mouse was working during the install. After a while the computer did not give any signs and I reboot and got the same result. What can I check to see if everything had been loaded correctly? The computer that I am using is a Pentium 133 with 64 MB of ram and a 3GB HDD, Logitech mouse with a PS/2 to serial adapter and a Matrox Millenium video card with 4MB of ram.
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Massimo

Well, 7.2 should have setup a non-fb (Non-FrameBuffer) boot option under LILO. If you chose GUB as your bootloader I can't help you, but LILO should have a "linux-nonfb" option. Choose that one and see what happens. ;)

Well I tried your suggestion and now I have a blue screen. I can see the mouse but nothing else. I tried to click either mouse button but no response. :(

Are you trying to boot into X? If so, what are your resolution settings?

Yes, I am trying to boot into X and the resolution is 800 X 600 24bit color.

I doubt that your X is properly configured. At the "blue" screen you are talking about, press ctrl+alt+F1 and see if you can get to a terminal. If you can, then login there and reconfigure you X server. If not, then choose "failsafe" at the LILO prompt to go into maintenance mode and configure it from there. :D

I tried CTRL-ALT F1 and it put me at the login prompt. But at that point I just do not know what to do.( remember I am a NEWBIE) I also tried the Failsafe mode but I got nowhere. I remember that during the install I tried the graphic configuration that I selected and I was able to see the screen fine. Why do you think this is the problem. Is there a command that I can type to see if my settings are correct?

Thanks

Try XF86Setup or xf86config

when I run Xf86setup, I am able to make the changes. I do not think that my changes are any different from the selection I have amde during the install. Anyway, at the end the program is asking to review the changes made by typing startx and that's when the server crashes.

:(

I am kind of upset. This is harder than I thought. I going to try to reinstall and maybe it will work out. Also that was another message that I found when I went to text mode.
"Loading Aurora...
could not open lock file /var/lock/console/massimo"

what does that mean? I went to check the permissions for the file and it was only -rw-------. Should I change the permission on the file or that is the way it should be?

xf86config is the setup for X4 which is what Drake 7.2 uses. XF86Setup is for X3.3.6 unless Mandrake included their own utility. Best to use the default method IMO.

What is your video card? If it is one of the newer Geforce2s then you need to get the latest drivers from Nvidia, the default "nv" driver does not work. You can check your driver settings by looking at /etc/X11/XF86Config under the "Drivers" section.

I have another possible cause... What are the contents of the /etc/X11 directory? Sometimes more than one XF86Config ends up in there and no matter how many times you run xf86config, your changes are useless because it's reading another config file.

Ignore the lock file, it should fix itself.

Oh yeah, and Aurora makes me want to puke. Drake definitely needs some new colors. :)

Can you disable Aurora during the intall? :)

You'd have to search through all those invidual packages but you should be able to deselect it. If if the damage is done and you're stuck a really nasty looking start up, just disable it in /etc/rc.d/rc*

Thanks for all the help. I am giving up on Mandrake 7.2. I am going to install redHat6.2
for now.

Thanks again
