i've got a small LAN at home that consists of 2 winblows98 machines and one Debian Linux box connected to a 4 port hub. I recently noticed that I've been getting a ton of messages in my syslog about my ipchains denying a packet inbound to my linux machine on port 137 and 138. I understand that these are the ports that samba works through... but I haven't touched anything dealing with samba yet and I haven't configured either winblows machines to look for my linux box. Is this just something that winblows does? Try to connect to macines that are on the network?

Best suggestion I can make is check out the samba website documentation. They have pretty good documentation on setting up the Windows to Linux connection. You may have something configured in that you are not aware of.

I'm 99% sure it's just broadcast crap to those ports. Basically stuff like trying to elect a "leader" and announcing that they are online, etc.
