Yesterday while doing some windows updates to my dad's pc the monitor broke up. I have reasons (very odd but valid ones ) to believe the scan method from windows updates page had something to do with it.
Well, i might get a new LCD or CRT but i lean more for the LCD.

I wanted some advice on good LCD brands/models (15" or 17"). All LCD should work 100% under Linux right? there aren't problems with that, right?

FWIW I have been using an LCD Monitor (NEC Multisync 1830) for a while and it was 'found' correctly using Xandros. It also works when using Knoppix, but when I installed Mandrake 9.0 it didn't want to play.
It is an 18" monitor with a native resolution of 1280 x 1024 but for some reason, Mandrake wouldn't run it at that resolution even after trying various monitor configurations.
So in answer to one of your questions, an LCD monitor will work just fine, but better with some distros than others.

Anytime you have a working X config for your video card and monitor, you should keep a backup copy so you can use that for other distros.

A few months ago I replaced an Acer 77e CRT with an Envision 600e 17" LCD monitor.

No probelms in Xandros at all - recognized it on boot and no issues changing resolutions.

I too recently purchased a ViewSonic LCD. It worked beautifully in that I did not have to change my config for X at all. The monitor adapted to the horizontal and vertical refresh rates I had from my old monitor and they were within spec. I must say though I myself don't feel the LCDs provide quite as crisp a picture as the good old CRTs yet.

I should be installing Debian (once again) any time soon...i saved some configs (dir_colors, eth0, X config *now*) from my Red Hat installation.

Well, thanks for the comments, i'll have them in mind.

I'm trying to get a friends digital LCD up, but I haven't had any luck. Could somebody please post the parts of their XF86Config file dealing with screens and video cards? The more the merrier!
Thanks Y'all!
(I'm not clear on EXACTLY what h/w yet, so the more posts, the merrier I'll be!)

Just an idea, but burn a knoppix CD, throw that in the drive, and save the XF86Config file.

This is a good trick for a lot of stubborn hardware!

I don't have a LCD yet, but i think

Configuring X Window for LCD Monitors (http://www.justlinux.com/nhf/X_Window/Configuring_X_Window_for_LCD_Monitors.html) by ElectraX must be useful.

Maybe you've read it already, but is worth mention.
