I am having problems installing a theme in kde (kde 3.0, Mandrake 9). In fact, I'm having trouble even usign the themes that seem to come with kde. In the theme manager, there are 4 themes to select from, but each one, even the default one, gives an error message, saying that it cannot find the .theme or .themerc file.

I've read many posts about similar issues and I feel that this is most likely because of kde not knowing where to find these themes. The folders themselves (which DO have a .themerc file) are in my home directory ( /home/daniel/themename/ )

I read in a post that the themes you download have to be in the directory where kde is installed, but I am entirely unable to find this directory!!! Some people have it in opt/kde3 along with opt/gnome, but my opt is empty! (even no files with . ) I used env to find where KDEDIR or KDEDIRS was, but there were no such variables, and echo $KDEDIR just gives a blank line. I used locate and I found only the following:

something in usr/share/mkd/kde which has a lot of .desktop files, pretty sure this is not the place wehre kde is installed :)

I have browsed alot through my files and found many places with clear gnome folders, but none of these also have a kde folder (or any folder that would have kde in it).

The other interesting thing I discovered was a .kde directory right in my /home/daniel directory. Is this where it was installed? Seems to make very little sense to me..... installing a windows manager in a users home directory... (btw I had the mandrake installer install both kde and gnome).

Obviously kde is installed, because I'm using it right now!!! the only problem I seem to have with it is this themes issue, which I've assumed is related to finding the directory where it is installed. Alternatively, perhaps somebody knows how I could tell the theme manager to look elsewhere for themes (other than in the place where kde is installed).

If anybody has any idea how I could find my kde directory (or if people also have a similar setup, where is yours?), or if you know of another way to install a theme, please let me know!!

They should go in /usr/share/apps/kstyle/themes/

Ok, well I've looked there and found lots of .themerc files, but this dones't help me gatting a theme installed.

I know I have a problem right from the start, since the first thing I ever did, without doing any tweaking, was going under theme manager and selecting on of the themes that was already loaded, and it gave me the error, it even gave me the error for default.

When I click on add to get a new theme, it browses with a filter for Theme files, which are NOT .theme and .themerc!! however, it did consider .ktheme to be a theme file (based on a theme i downloaded).

So I downloaded this theme, and went to add and found the .ktheme file. Again it says that it can't find a .theme or .themerc. However, each time I "add" in theme manager, it creates a folder in my home directory with the name of the theme, and in it is a .themerc file that looks perfectly in order. But why is it not reading it there? So I copy the .themerc file to the path you gave me (had to be root to do it too) but it still cannot find the .theme or .themerc file.

What different kinds of files am I looking for whe I install a theme (Do I need a .ktheme, a .themerc, and a bunch of pictures,...) and where do I place them in my directories. When they are placed, do I simply go to theme manager and "add" the theme?
