Do I need to have a gui running inorder to play an mp3? I have a buddy who is building a machine for his car, and intends to throw a distro of linux on it, but the display he intends to use doesn't support gui's. Monocrome LCD. On another note, we are looking for a moded distro that would be able to display terminal on an lcd very similar to a calculator's, and that is preferably very light weight. Any help would be much appreciated.

And no, no need for gui to play mp3's ...or any format for that matter. There's a bunch of console players around: search and you'll find the one that fits the best.

any of the big distributions comes with console programs for mp3. I am using SuSE 7.3 and recall there are a couple that come with it, but don't make me look it up, unless you are really helpless.

now, the best way to go with this is do a google search and see for articles or web pages that have a HOW I DID IT for something like the thing your friend wants to build.

in any case, if you find yourself in a dead end let me know, I'll tell you the mp3 players I know and I'll scan a copy of an article I found in 2600 magazine a while back describing something like what you wanted to do.

ps. don't pick up the first console program for mp3, look through all of them and choose wisely. don't forget to add a remote control :D

good luck

ps2. if by any chance it takes me too long to reply to you (I often go to my user cp page and unsubscribe from all pages), send me a message through this site
