I myself like full gnome and full kde but a lowend machine like yours will be very slow running those as default desktop. patman 02-01-2003, 07:25 PM Yeah, either of those two will work just fine. I'm using fluxbox on a P166 48MB and can run mozilla and a few other apps without too much strain. I was using KDE 3.0.5 and that was pretty taxing, but it can be run. It's just very slow. If only I hadn't killed my good computer  IRQ5 02-02-2003, 06:35 AM Wow. Exactly what I've got. P100/32meg - I have an old distro that ran an old KDE fine but just don't much care for KDE. Blackbox, Waimea, and Ratpoison all run great on it and I imagine any wm that wasn't bloated beyond belief would. I did tweak hdparm and of course have a 64 meg swap partition enabled - (something was weird about my installation and it wasn't mounted at first - the old KDE even ran on the bare 32 but was slow as hell). In normal offline use I don't even really dip into the swap partition and I'm not sure the hard drive tweaking made a noticeable increase in reading and writing, either. So, yeah, blackbox, etc., would be fine. nrmx 02-02-2003, 11:16 PM fluxbox... Light, powerful and simple. hop-frog 02-03-2003, 12:00 AM I wouldn't recommend an older version of GNOME or KDE. Even 1.0 is slow in 32MB and these are not very good anyway. A really light-weight KDE-like desktop will be out soon, called EDE (equinox). It is still in beta. IceWM, XFce, WindowMaker, Blackbox, and ROX are all good choices. Check out http://www.xwinman.org/ for others, but these four are your best bet. trilarian 02-03-2003, 09:08 PM Enlightenment....takes a little while to get used to, but once you do you can't leave it. A little more overhead than blackbos/fluxbox but not as heavy as gnome/kde. justlinux.com
