Hi folks
I configured XFree86 using XF86Setup. I then when back and edited XF86Config file in /etc/X11 only commenting out two video mode lines b/c the font was too small. Worked fine until I rebooted now I get an Xwindows log-in screen, when I log-in or cntrl-alt-backspace, it goes back to the log-in screen. So now I can get to root to re -edit stuff. If I do get back to root what file do I change to stop x-windows from starting at boot-up

Debian potato 2.2rev2
pII 500, 128MB
video card: 3dfx Voodoo3 3000

any ideas, or need more info?

any help is greatly appreciated

I may not be understanding this right, and I dont want to insult you, but there is a file in the /etc dir called inittab you can edit the line id:5:initdefault , this tells init what run level to start in, multi is 3 on sun and should be the same on linux.

Does this help, or areyou looking for a per user setting? :eek

Thanks for responding/ Your'e not insulting me at all. How do I get to root though so I can edit inittab? Linux is booting into the xwindows log-in/password screen. Once there I can't get xwindows to shut-down, nor will it move forward and start xwindows so I can get to root there. The correct log-in just brings me back to the log-in window again. Nothing works, not ctrl-alt-bkspace. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't even work, I need to do a manual reboot. I tried the rescue disk, that didn't get me anywhere. Is there something I can type when at the boot prompt? Thanks

I think on Linux you can press cntr -alt F1,F2,F3,F4 for virtual terminals, see if you can get a virtual terminal and log in as root, change the 5 to a 3.
